Chapter 21

SOPHIE

Sophie paused at the entrance to the library, glancing inside. She had not visited the library much lately, partly because she hadn’t the time to do so, though knowing there was a hidden aspect of the library that she was the only one to know about did draw her. The library wasn’t full of the stories she had always enjoyed when she was younger, but there was information and knowledge that she couldn’t get any other place. She still hadn’t the time to work through all of it, but eventually, she suspected she was going to need to do so.

“Are we supposed to go in there?” Reabah asked, looking over at Sophie.

She still hadn’t gotten fully adjusted to the idea that she had five potentials who trailed after her most of the time when she was in the city. It might’ve been easier had she kept them at the school, but seeing as how Sophie didn’t want to stay at the school all the time and she wanted to be able to come and go, it meant that in order to train them effectively, she had to bring them with her.

“Actually, that wouldn’t be the worst idea,” she said. “I would like for you to research stories about the gods,” she said, smiling to herself.

Gerissa wrinkled her brow. “Why?”

“You don’t like stories?” Sophie asked.

“I mean, they were fine when I was a kid, but do we really need to go looking into stories about gods now? Why should we bother?”

“Where do you think your power comes from?” Sophie asked.

She looked at each of them. They were gathered in a tight cluster, having followed her like she was some sort of mother goose, and they were her little goslings trailing after her. Dressed all in the off-white uniforms the Raven Queen and Ridaln, she suspected, had chosen for them, they could pass for something along that line.

“It comes from inside of us,” Bradel said. “At least, I feel it bubbling inside of me before I unleash it.”

“That’s true enough,” Sophie said. “But what happens when you link to each other?”

They had only done that one or two times, and only with Sophie’s supervision. At least, she hoped it was only with her supervision. She did feel a little bit concerned that they might be trying to push themselves without her. Then again, the idea that they would push themselves was part of the process and part of what she wanted from them. Doing so would allow them a chance to continue to grow in ways that Sophie had not had when she was at their level. She had been forced to work on her own. She’d had Parvella working with her, and for a time, she’d even had the Raven Queen working with her, but she still had been mostly on her own.

“It still comes from each other,” Bradel said, looking around before turning back to Sophie. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to pull that kind of power to ourselves.”

“And
